How to Work as a Nurse in the USA

This guide will help international nurses understand the complete process of working in the United States from credential evaluation to licensing, NCLEX exam, and EB-3 visa processing.

Step 1: Credential Evaluation

Before applying for the NCLEX or nursing license in the USA, your nursing education and license must be verified by an authorized credentialing agency.

Credentialing Agencies include:

  • CGFNS (Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools)
  • ERES, Josef Silny, IERF, and other U.S.approved agencies.

Documents required for credential evaluation:

  • Nursing education transcripts
  • Nursing license verification from home country
  • IELTS test results (as proof of English proficiency)

Purpose:
Credential evaluation ensures your nursing education and license meet U.S. standards and are valid for licensure.

Step 2: Apply for the NCLEX-RN Examination

After credential evaluation, you can apply for the NCLEX-RN exam the licensing exam required to practice as a Registered Nurse in the USA.

Process:

  1. Choose the U.S. state board of nursing where you want to be licensed (e.g., Texas, New York, Florida, California).
  2. Submit your credential evaluation report to the selected state board.
  3. Receive Authorization to Test (ATT) after approval.
  4. Schedule and take your NCLEX-RN exam.

Tip:
Each state board has its own requirements. Nurseshire will guide you through selecting the most suitable state for your application.

Step 3: Apply for State Nursing License

After passing the NCLEX-RN exam, you can apply for a Registered Nurse license from the State Board of Nursing where you passed the exam.

You will need:

  • NCLEX-RN pass result
  • Valid passport and identification
  • Credential evaluation report
  • Nursing license from home country

Once approved, you will receive your U.S. Registered Nurse License, which makes you eligible for employment and visa sponsorship.

Step 4: EB-3 Visa Eligibility

To qualify for an EB-3 (Employment-Based, Third Preference) Visa, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a valid nursing license in your home country
  • Have at least 2 years of direct patient care experience
  • Hold a U.S. state nursing license (after passing NCLEX-RN)

The EB-3 visa allows you to live and work permanently in the United States as a Registered Nurse.

Step 5: Employer Sponsorship (Form I-140)

Nurses are classified under Schedule A Occupations, which means the employer does not need to file a Labor Certification (Form ETA-9089) with the Department of Labor.

Process Overview:

  1. The U.S. employer offers a permanent job contract to the nurse.
  2. The employer ensures compliance with U.S. wage laws and files Form I-140 (Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker) directly with USCIS.
  3. Once approved, a Priority Date is assigned.

Processing Time:
Usually takes 6–8 months for I-140 approval.

Step 6: National Visa Center (NVC) Processing

After Form I-140 is approved, the case is transferred to the National Visa Center (NVC).

Next Steps:

  1. Pay the NVC visa processing fee.
  2. Complete and submit Form DS-260 (Immigrant Visa Application) online.
  3. Upload required documents (passport, police clearance, medical exam results, etc.).

Step 7: U.S. Consulate Interview

Once your documents are reviewed, you will receive an interview appointment at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your country.

During the interview:

  • Present original documents.
  • Answer questions related to your nursing background and job offer.
  • Upon approval, you will receive your immigrant visa.

After arrival in the USA, you will receive your Green Card and can start your nursing career with your sponsoring employer.
