How to Work as a Nurse in United Kingdom

we assist international nurses through every stage of the UK Nursing Registration and Immigration Process from document verification to obtaining your NMC license and visa.

Step 1: NMC Registration and Eligibility Application

To work as a nurse in the UK, you must register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
You will need to create an NMC online account and upload the following documents:

  • Nursing qualification and transcript
  • Valid nursing license/registration from your home country
  • Valid passport
  • English language proficiency test result (IELTS or OET)
  • Police clearance certificate

Fee: £140 (non-refundable)
Paid directly to the NMC at the time of submitting your eligibility application.

Once your documents are approved, the NMC will confirm your eligibility to proceed with the next stage  the Competence Tests.

Step 2: Pass the Computer-Based Test (CBT)

The CBT is a theoretical, computer-based exam that assesses your clinical and numeracy knowledge.
It can be taken in your home country through Pearson VUE test centers.

  • CBT Exam Fee: £83 (first sitting)
  • CBT Resit (Clinical only): £70
  • CBT Resit (Numeracy only): £50

Once you pass the CBT, you meet the knowledge requirement of the NMC.

Step 3: Apply for Job and Health and Care Worker Visa

After passing the CBT, you become eligible to apply for nursing positions in the UK.

Once you receive a job offer, your UK employer will provide a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)  required for the Health and Care Worker Visa.

Visa Application Process

  • Apply online for the Health and Care Worker Visa on the UK Government website.
  • Pay the visa fee (usually £284 for up to 3 years).
  • You are exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) under this visa category.
  • Provide required documents:
  • Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)
  • Valid passport
  • English test result (IELTS/OET)
  • Police clearance certificate
  • Proof of funds (if not covered by sponsor)

Once approved, you can travel to the UK to complete the final stage of your registration.

Step 4: Take the OSCE Exam in the UK

After arriving in the UK, you will undergo training and prepare for the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)  a practical skills test that evaluates your ability to deliver safe, effective, and professional care.

  • OSCE Exam Fee: £794 (first sitting)
  • Conducted at approved UK test centers.
  • Many employers provide OSCE preparation support and may cover the exam cost.

Passing the OSCE completes the competence requirement of the NMC.

Step 5: Obtain NMC License and PIN Number

Once you pass the OSCE, the NMC will finalize your registration, and you will receive your NMC PIN number.
This allows you to work as a Registered Nurse (Band 5) in the UK.
